This chapter brings us to Rowan Gate Lodge, known locally as “Kennedy’s Lodge.” Once derelict for more than twenty years, this small country lodge was brought back from the brink through a complete rebuild – new roof, floors, rain goods, kitchen, and bathroom – while preserving the essence of its Georgian character.
After more than a year of meticulous restoration, Rowan Gate Lodge welcomed its first guests on July 1st, 2025, marking a proud moment in Mount Congreve’s journey to breathe new life into its historic estate.
Inside, rich heritage greens, mustard velvets, and carefully sourced antiques create a sense of warmth and understated luxury. Every element has been chosen to evoke the feeling of an elegant country escape – one that balances authenticity with comfort.
Rowan Gate Lodge stands as proof that with imagination, craftsmanship, and care, even the most forgotten corners of an estate can become something extraordinary once more.
The Kitchen
Before:
Once stripped back to bare plaster, the kitchen was a shadow of its former self. Years of damp and decay meant everything – – from the roof to the floors – had to be renewed.
Old Kitchen
After:
Now a warm and characterful heart of the home, the kitchen features heritage-green cabinetry, oak worktops, and brick detailing that nods to the estate’s Georgian roots. A butler sink, brass fixtures, and vintage accents create the feeling of an old-world country kitchen – comfortable yet refined.
New Kitchen
The Supper Room – From Bedroom to Dining Delight
Before:
Originally a small bedroom, this space has been reimagined as an intimate dining room.
Old Bedroom
AFTER: Panelled in deep green with golden velvet drapes and a crystal chandelier, the Supper Room now feels like a private dining salon. The antique oak table from R.J. Keighrey and vintage Waterford glassware create an atmosphere perfect for leisurely meals and conversation by candlelight.
New Supper Room
Sitting Room
Before:
Once neglected, with peeling paint and minimal light, the living room was entirely rebuilt and redecorated.
Old Sitting Room
After:
The transformation is extraordinary — dark heritage tones, mustard velvet armchairs, a Persian Tabriz rug, and a tufted ottoman now create an inviting space that blends period charm with comfort. Gilt frames and a marquetry drinks trolley complete the look, giving guests a true sense of Georgian elegance.
New Sitting Room
Bedroom
Before: A narrow, unassuming room with peeling walls.
Old Bedroom
After: Now a peaceful retreat featuring an antique Louis XV bed dressed in Irish linens, with soft light spilling across deep green walls. Warm textures – velvet, FOXFORD wool, and antique wood – give a feeling of intimacy and timelessness. The attention to detail makes this a room to linger in.
New Bedroom
The Dog Room
Before:
Derelict and damp, this small area was once unusable.
Old Bathroom
After:
Now one of Rowan Lodge’s most charming touches — a dedicated “Dog Room” for four-legged guests, complete with an Irish-made Country Pet bed and bowls. Even the wall patina was intentionally preserved, celebrating the character of the original plaster.
