About Herman Dool (1924–2004)

Born in Boskoop, the Netherlands, Herman Dool trained within one of Europe’s most respected nursery traditions before coming to Ireland. Working in close partnership with Ambrose Congreve, he helped develop Mount Congreve’s internationally celebrated collections of:

– Magnolias
– Camellias
– Rhododendrons
– Rare trees and shrubs

His approach combined botanical knowledge, structural composition, and seasonal layering — ensuring that the garden delivers impact in spring, summer, autumn and winter.

In recognition of his contribution to horticulture and to Dutch–Irish relations, he was awarded the Gouden Orde van Oranje-Nassau by the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

What You Will See

Visitors to the exhibition will discover:

– Archival photography documenting the garden’s development
– Plant records and horticultural documentation
– Interpretation on collection development and estate stewardship
– The story of how Mount Congreve became one of Ireland’s most significant gardens

The exhibition connects the interior of Mount Congreve House with the living garden beyond – allowing visitors to understand the long-term planning behind today’s spectacular seasonal displays.
